A 1990 masterpiece by the Spanish flamenco quartet Ketama, consisting of José Soto (vo, g), Juan Carmona (g), Antonio Carmona (vo, perc), and José Miguel Carmona (g). The album also features numerous Spanish musicians, including Paco Ibáñez (tp), alongside piano, strings, horns, and chorus. Drawing on traditional forms such as rumba, tango, bulerías, sevillanas, and “bulesalsa,” a fusion of bulerías and salsa, the group carries forward the musical traditions of Spain, Catalonia, and Latin America while transforming them through highly refined performances and a vivid, reverberant production. The result is a superb set of spiritually charged contemporary Latin music, rooted firmly in tradition yet rendered with a distinctly modern sensibility.
