Trumpeter Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago—one of the definitive groups of Afrocentric avant-jazz—released this striking leader album on ECM in 1986. Featuring an unusual horn-driven nonet with Stanton Davis (tp), Malachi Thompson (tp), Rasul Siddik (tp), Steve Turre (tb), Frank Lacy (tb), Vincent Chancey (fh), Bob Stewart (tuba), and Phillip Wilson (ds), the album delivers dramatic compositions throughout, rooted in a deep reverence for old jazz traditions in the spirit of a marching band, yet powerfully transformed into something new. At the same time, Bowie’s wit and adventurous spirit shine through in the rap-featured jazz-funk cut A3 and the richly Afro-Cuban-flavored B2 dedicated to Machito. A boldly inventive work. Original German pressing.

A3: B Funk
A4: Blueberry Hill
B2: Macho
