A 1978 release by singer-songwriter Maki Asakawa, who began performing in U.S. military camps and cabarets in the 1960s, before being discovered in the late ’60s by Shūji Terayama and Kōji Teramoto. Centering her activities at Shinjuku’s Scorpio, her live performances quickly earned overwhelming acclaim, leading to the release of numerous classic albums. This album captures a live recording from Kyodai Seibu Kōdō Vol. 3: Maki Asakawa Live “Yoru”, performed in 1977 at Kyoto University’s Seibu Auditorium. Featuring powerful renditions of her signature songs such as “Anata Nashi de,” “Sabishisa ni wa Namae ga Nai,” “Uramado,” “Minatomachi,” and “Sore wa Spotlight de wa Nai,” the performances are given fresh emotional depth by an inspired lineup including Nobuyoshi Hagiwara (acoustic & electric guitar), Yoichiro Ikeda of Mentanpin (acoustic guitar), Takeshi Shibuya (piano), Tamio Kawabata (bass), Ken Yoshida (bass), Hiroshi Tsunoda (drums), Tadanori Kokawa (trombone), and Shigeru Izumiya (electric guitar). The sense of being there is palpable throughout—a deeply moving live album that vividly conveys the atmosphere of the venue.
