Michael Mantler
Something There
WATT (Germany) 1983
WATT/13 (LP) gatefold, insert
sleeve : EX-(SRW, slight dirt)
media : EX+/EX+(some parts have slight surface noise)
This is a leader album released in 1983 by Austrian-born jazz trumpeter Michael Mantler, who found success in America. Produced by his wife, pianist Carla Bley, the performing lineup features Carla Bley (p), Mike Stern (g), Steve Swallow (b), Nick Mason (ds), and The London Symphony Orchestra. Michael Gibbs handled the arrangements and conducting. It can be considered a continuation of his 1978 work "Movies" and 1980's "More Movies." The thrilling atmosphere created by the string orchestra, the minimally repeating bass lines, and Mike Stern's howling electric guitar are quite striking, making it feel as if you are listening to the soundtrack of a hardboiled or suspense movie set in 1970s New York. This is a sound that epitomizes late New York Loft Jazz.
