This is the original soundtrack album for the 1985 film Chico Rei, directed by Rio de Janeiro–born filmmaker Walter Rima Jr. The music was created with contributions from Minas Gerais legends Milton Nascimento and Wagner Tiso, alongside Rio de Janeiro’s Clementina De Jesus and Grupo Vissungo. Inspired by the story of a Congolese king who was brought to Brazil as a slave, discovered gold in Minas, secured civil rights and the freedom of his companions, and became the first Black man to own land in Brazil, the soundtrack is colored with primitive African folk music and the lyrical Minas sound of Nascimento and Tiso. An outstanding work—highly recommended.
