This is the leader album released by the American saxophonist Ornette Coleman in 1959, unquestionably regarded as the father of free jazz, having significantly influenced numerous musicians, including Don Cherry. The A-side features a quartet with Don Cherry on trumpet, Percy Heath on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums, while on the B-side, Red Mitchell plays the bass. This album offers a rare opportunity to experience Coleman's initial steps in establishing his unique style, which evolved from themes influenced by his roots in R&B and early jazz into improvisation. It's a valuable recording showcasing the beginnings of Coleman's innovative style. It's not as groundbreaking as the avant-garde jazz that later prospered in New York, making it more accessible to listen to. If you're new to the origins of free jazz, this is definitely worth a try.
