Pat Metheny, an undisputed super guitarist who continues to be active at the forefront of jazz music, invited Ornette Coleman, a free jazz superstar who has greatly influenced Don Cherry and many other jazz musicians, to record this masterpiece album in 1986. The quintet features Charlie Haden (b), Jack DeJohnette (dr), and Ornette Coleman's son, drummer/percussionist Denardo Coleman. All of the songs are original scores by Coleman and co-written by Metheny, and range from thrilling, free-improvising, floodlit jazz to swingin' cool jazz. This is a record that offers a different side of Metheny that one might not expect from his ECM and Pat Metheny Group works.
