This 1990 album by Paul Bley—one of Canada’s most renowned jazz pianists—marks another milestone in a career that began in the 1950s. Known for his work with the Ornette Coleman Quartet, the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, and many acclaimed recordings with his own groups, Bley performs here in a trio with Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Keith Copeland (drums). The album features compositions by legendary figures in jazz history, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Tadd Dameron. At 57 years old, Bley delivers melodies with a generous and clear tone, and his mature performance is truly outstanding—a kind of return-to-roots project. It’s easy to see why many people say Bley became even better with age. In fact, he's been excellent throughout his entire career. Highly recommended.
