Peter Warren’s 1982 leader album for Japo, ECM’s sister label. An American bassist/cellist with deep connections to Japanese jazz musicians, Warren is also known for works such as the trio album Trinity with Mitsuhiko Sato and Pierre Favre, and the quartet album Vibrations with Terumasa Hino and others. The lineup on this one is exceptional, featuring John Purcell on soprano sax, John Scofield on guitar, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ray Anderson on trombone. Standout cuts include A1, propelled by Purcell’s fierce, primitive saxophone attack; the title track A2, with its Afro-spiritual atmosphere recalling the Art Ensemble of Chicago; and B1, where Warren’s fluid, beautifully flowing bass lines bring Eberhard Weber to mind. A thoroughly strong set from start to finish, unfolding as an energetic yet deeply immersive piece of contemporary/experimental jazz.
