An exceptionally rare arrival. Released in 1972 on Indian Records Inc., the Oklahoma-based label devoted to Native American traditional music. This album documents songs of the Sioux people of the northern Midwest: Side A features war dance music derived from the ritual act of male dancers pressing down the grass underfoot to prepare the ceremonial ground; B1 presents an intertribal social dance piece intended for gatherings across tribal lines; and B2 delivers an even faster grass dance song than the Side A selections. Thunderous drum rhythms and near-ecstatic vocal cries summon a deeply primal, kinetic energy throughout.
