An album recorded in New York by Ravi Shankar, the great ambassador of Indian classical music, together with tabla player Alla Rakha and tamboura player Shyam But-Nagar, and released by World Pacific in 1967. This important work comes from a period when Shankar’s international reputation was rapidly expanding, the same year his appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival would bring him to even wider attention. Highlights include A2, where the delicate melodic lines of the sitar and the tabla gradually build over time, and B1, a nearly 25-minute long performance that unfolds over a taut drone, drawing out deep shades of expression and leading the listener into a profoundly meditative world. A superb album that allows the beauty of orthodox North Indian classical music to be fully appreciated.

B1: Raga Marwa
