Released in 1987, this album is led by American trombonist Ray Anderson, known for his work with the Barry Altschul Trio, Slickaphonics and many other projects. Featuring Stanton Davis on trumpet, Mark Dresser on bass, Ronnie Burrage on drums, Perry Robinson on clarinet and Bob Stewart on tuba, the album finds Anderson—often associated with freer approaches—working from a foundation of early jazz and bop, while bringing in blues and soul inflections through sharply twisted, highly inventive arrangements.
There are plenty of moments here that also resonate with the sound and spirit of the Art Ensemble of Chicago from the same era. Excellent from start to finish and warmly recommended throughout. Canadian pressing just arrived.
