1975 leader date by American jazz pianist Richard Beirach, a New York native known not only for his many recordings on ECM but also for frequent collaborations with Japanese artists including Masahiko Togashi and Terumasa Hino. A piano trio set with bassist Frank Tusa and drummer Jeff Williams, the album features a deeply spiritual reading of Miles Davis’s mid-1950s composition “Nardis” on A1, along with “Places” on A2, a Dave Liebman piece also heard on Open Sky’s 1973 album of the same name, which likewise featured Frank Tusa. The remainder is made up of original compositions by Beirach and Tusa, with B3 standing out in particular for its beautifully patient, wave-like interplay, the three musicians slowly layering their sounds in a quietly mesmerizing way. This is the 1985 Japanese Polydor issue from the ECM Highest Quality series, digitally mastered from the original master tape and pressed using high-grade materials.
