This is a 1970 leader album by Ron Carter, one of America's top bassists, who has played on sessions with Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, and countless other artists and groups. Produced by flutist Herbie Mann, the album features a sextet of Herbie Hancock, Sam Brown, Hubert Laws, Grady Tate, and Willam E. Cobham, Jr. A1, a soul-jazz number in which the individual parts gently intertwine with a pleasant groove, leads into Carter's bass solo on A2, and B4, in which Hancock's serene piano is gently introduced from the deeply reverberated arco technique. It is a perfect example of the variety of Carter's bass expression. A masterpiece.
