Lakshminarayana Shankar, a musician from Madras, South India, who has been active mainly in the U.S., released this album on ECM in 1981. The album is dedicated to John Maclaughlin, a guitarist and friend with whom Lakshminarayana Shankarg has collaborated many times, including with Shakti and other groups. Zakir Hussain also participates in this album. It contains one long piece of over 20 minutes on each side. The double-necked 10-string violin he invented himself is used to perform South Indian classical music with tremendous intensity. The intensely resonant double violin and Hussain's solid tabla fly across the sound field, and the super-complex beat, which shifts from 51/2 to 41/2, intensifies as the second half approaches, finally plunging into a trance-like state. This is a masterpiece that allows the listener to feel the depth of Indian classical music.
