This album was released in 1986 by The Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet, a one-off project that brought together Wayne Horvitz, John Zorn, Ray Drummond, and Bobby Previte. As the name suggests, this album is a tribute to Sonny Clark, an American pianist who left many great recordings on Blue Note. It is rare to hear a very relaxed and austere performance by a strong figure in the free music world. Drummond's bass is also unusually thick. I recommend B1, which is a superbly original performance that straddles the line between straight-ahead and avant-garde.
