An American saxophonist and a leading figure in West Coast cool jazz, Stan Getz released this album on Verve in 1967. It features a live recording from a 1966 concert in Paris, performed with a quartet including Gary Burton (vb), Steve Swallow (b), and Roy Haynes (ds). Highlights include A1, the theme from the film Black Orpheus, which Getz also performed on his 1962 bossa nova masterpiece Big Band Bossa Nova, and B2, a well-known song from the musical film The Sound of Music. Getz’s vibrant and expressive saxophone playing is particularly striking throughout. Notably, the album features Burton, who was still a newcomer at the time, and Swallow, just 26 years old.
A4: On green Dolphin Street
B2: Edelweiss
