A highly recommended original soundtrack album for Moeru Aki (Glowing Autumn), the film based on the novel by Hiroyuki Itsuki and directed by Masaki Kobayashi, with music composed by Toru Takemitsu — one of Japan’s most important composers, whose work moved far beyond the framework of contemporary classical music into a wide range of experimental approaches.
Performed as an orchestral work conducted by Hikaru Hayashi with Tokyo Concerts, the score is beautifully orchestrated, weaving in subtle elements of Oriental music and tango while carrying Takemitsu’s unmistakable sense of nostalgia and deep emotional resonance. The music seems to lead the listener toward distant, foreign landscapes, yet there is something strangely familiar and deeply affecting about Takemitsu’s film music, even if one has never heard it before. A truly wonderful record. It is a great shame that the film itself has become difficult to see due to the scandal involving its production company, Toho.
