This is an album by Toshiro Mayuzumi, a leading postwar Japanese composer and contemporary musician who introduced music concrete, electronic music and avant-garde music to Japan in the early 1950s, and who himself released many compositions influenced by these genres. The full version of "Nirvana Symphony" (1958), Mayuzumi's greatest masterpiece, was composed as part of a series of compositions expressing the Buddhist world, conducted by Wilhelm Schuchter and performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. A magnificent cosmic meditation space depicting the world of the Buddha in three groups of five chapters. No electronic sounds are used, but it is astonishing that an orchestra can express such a cosmic vision so well.
