This album was released in 1982 as the second installment of the "Silk Road Music Journey" series supervised by Fumio Koizumi, a leading scholar of world ethnic music in Japan. The album features performances by virtuoso players of rare Chinese instruments such as the kunzhi and lushang, as well as the three-stringed rubbing instruments used by the Turkic Kirghiz people, the kumuz and the Uyghur lehwab. The music shows how the Chinese continent is home to a large and diverse ethnic population, and how various traditions and cultures were transmitted via the Silk Road and developed in their own way. In particular, the performance of the Rehwāb bears a striking resemblance to Turkish music.
