An album released in 1967 as part of the American Odyssey label’s renowned Music of Our Time series, which features numerous legendary recordings by artists like Terry Riley and John Cage. This album highlights works by three pioneering Japanese composers of the time: Akira Miyoshi, Toru Takemitsu, and Toshiro Mayuzumi. Performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki, Side A features Miyoshi’s Concerto for Orchestra. Side B opens with Takemitsu’s early masterpiece Textures, which boldly incorporates tone clusters, followed by Mayuzumi’s Mandala Symphony, a seminal work inspired by Buddhist philosophy, expressed through a soundscape constructed without concrete materials, conveying its thematic essence.

A2: Toru Takemitsu “Textures”
