Space Theater Expo '70 Steel Pavilion Records
RCA (Japan) 1970
JRZ-2501 (LP) single jacket, obi (SPSE: two very small tears on back), 8-page booklet
sleeve : EX+ (light scuffs on corners)
media : EX+/EX+ (some slight surface noise in parts)
This is a historical masterpiece record of the music composed by Toru Takemitsu, Yuji Takahashi, and Iannis Xenakis for the Steel Pavilion at the Osaka Expo, the largest festival in Japanese history, held in 1970. Seiji Ozawa and Hiroshi Wakasugi conducted, and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra performed. A1 "Crossing" by Toru Takemitsu, for two orchestras with solo instruments and a female chorus, was a score composed specifically for the Space Theater. A2 "Yeguen" by Yuji Takahashi is a four-layer, three-dimensional stereo music piece using sound sculptures by Francois Baschet and the sounds of woodwind instruments. B1 "Hibiki Hana Ma" by Iannis Xenakis is an electroacoustic work for 12 channels and 800 speakers. All of these are landmark works in the history of contemporary/avant-garde music. I have visited the Steel Pavilion, whose building and space are still preserved at the Expo site, and I was very interested in what it actually sounded like in that multi-dimensional sound space, where speakers were installed in various places to realize the temporal texture of the sound image.
