This is a field recording album produced by Paul Berliner, a multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist who also created works deeply influenced by African music, such as "The Sun Rises Late Here," which was featured in "OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION." It was released in 1973 by Nonesuch's world music division Explorer Series, and features mbira (thumb piano) performances by the Shona people who live in the Rhodesia area of Central Africa. A1 features a unique polyrhythmic shaker and mbira melodies with chants and shouts coming from various directions, while A3 is particularly interesting with its unique falsetto chants moving up and down the scale. The album features traditional music that expresses various situations and emotions rooted in daily life throughout. The recording quality is excellent, and the simple yet warm sounds resonate beautifully, making it a masterpiece. You can feel the roots of minimalist music.
