A 1978 release from Nonesuch’s acclaimed Explorer Series, devoted to traditional music and field recordings from around the world. Recorded by David Lewiston in 1977 in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, in northwestern India, the album documents a Shedur ritual of exorcism conducted by Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche. The deep, overtone-rich chanting, sharply resonant ritual instruments, and the tense sonic space created by winds and percussion go far beyond the conventional framework of ethnic or religious music, producing an extraordinarily avant-garde sound. Tibetan Buddhist music of this kind had a profound influence on jazz musicians such as Don Cherry, as well as experimental artists including Musica Elettronica Viva and its member Alvin Curran.
