Super obscure one has just arrived. This album was released in 1977 by Regal, a Singaporean label under EMI. Conducted by Zhan Senxiong—also known as a singer—and arranged by Tianjia, it features 12 instrumental tracks of classic Taiwanese folk songs, including A1 and A5, which were also famously sung by Teresa Teng in the 1970s and continue to be performed by many Taiwanese singers today. The musical style closely resembles Japanese kayōkyoku and enka, making it feel very familiar, but what truly sets it apart is the fascinating arrangement and performance, incorporating electric piano, synthesizers, concrete sounds, and even what seems to be a theremin (!). Funky phrases also pop up in just the right spots. It’s a truly unique release, comparable to the Korean pop instrumental oddity Keompyuteo Deuleom Deuleom!! Vol. 3, released in 1979. The highlight is B2, which features a primitive-style chant—absolutely stunning.
