This 1982 album by Ney Matogrosso, the vocalist of the Brazilian psychedelic band Secos e Molhados—who released two striking albums in the 1970s—is a soulful and saudade-infused work that masterfully blends Brazilian musical essence with the flavor of New York–style sounds reminiscent of Leroy Burgess and D-Train. A standout track is A5, where groovy funk beats and choro sections alternate seamlessly. The album showcases a unique fusion that remains true to its Brazilian roots while embracing international influences. The true highlight, however, is B3—a Disco Tropicália gem. It begins with Ney Matogrosso’s androgynous vocals swaying gently over electric piano, then gradually unfolds into an emotionally rich, urban mellow AOR disco track, complete with sweeping strings and vibrant horns. A stunning and highly recommended piece.
