An album released in 1977 as part of CBS/Sony's Dyna Sound 45 series, which featured recordings on 76 cm/s master tape, 45 RPM cutting, and the Direct Plating Type II method. Side A features Ark Percussion Staff, a group of percussionists active in the 20th century’s contemporary music scene—including Yasunori Yamaguchi, Sumire Yoshihara, Yoji Sadanari, Michi Sato, Jun Sugawara, and Toshiaki Ishiuchi—performing Toccata for Percussion by Carlos Chávez. Side B contains an improvisational performance by Yasunori Yamaguchi and American percussionist Michael Ranta. The highlight of the album is undoubtedly Side B, where, true to its title, the powerful gravitational force of the percussion ensemble engulfs the listener in a deep, cosmic soundscape of the highest order. It evokes memories of their collaboration on Toru Takemitsu’s masterpiece Seasons/Towards. The sound quality is also exceptional. Highly, highly recommended.
