Casey Sokol, Eugene Chadbourne
Improvised Music from Acoustic Piano and Guitar
Music Gallery Editions (Canada) 1977
MGE 9 (LP)
sleeve : EX-(wear and light collapse on corner)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise)
An obscure record has arrived. Released in 1977, this album pairs American pianist Casey Sokol — who was active as a member of the Canadian Creative Music Collective alongside John Oswald, Michael Snow, and others — with American free improviser/guitarist Eugene Chadbourne. This is the only analog release Sokol issued under his own name. The solo performances by each artist on A2/B1 are excellent, but the real stunners are A1, an imaginative duo of prepared piano producing sounds like distant thunder and guitar that resembles random metallic noise, and B2, a live recording from a 1977 concert at The Music Gallery using a similar approach. It is so intense that it almost sounds like environmental sounds captured through field recording. Highly recommended.
