The Hal Russell NRG Ensemble is a group featuring Hal Russell, an American player who has been active since the 60's and plays from drums to reeds, along with Mars Williams, Brian Sandstrom, Kent Kessler, Steve Hunt and others. This album was released on ECM in 1991 and contains live recordings from their appearances at The Tampere Jazz Happening in Finland and The Internationales Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1990. The performance is overwhelming from start to finish, with a flood of intense interplay of various instruments like trumpets, saxophones, and other lead instruments, guitars, bass, drums, percussion, vibraphone, and didjeridoo, the ultimate in free jazz sessions. The distorted drones of the didjeridu, which seem to have some kind of effect, and it is amazing.
