A 1976 release by Shitsunaigaku ’70, a group formed by flutist Ryu Noguchi, violinist Saburo Ueki, and pianist Midori Matsutani. The album features chamber works by major postwar Japanese contemporary composers including Akira Miyoshi, Yoshio Hachimura, and Teizo Matsumura. According to the liner notes, the group was formed with the aim of reviving the trio sonata tradition that flourished in the classical era, though here that idea is reimagined through the instrumentation of flute, violin, and continuo. The result is a strikingly avant-garde program of contemporary music, in which melodies carrying a distinctly Japanese sense of lyricism seem to drift through the sonic space. The sound quality is also exceptionally beautiful—truly breathtaking at moments. Highly recommended.
