This album was released in 1969 by the German cellist Siegfried Palm, who was not only an active member of the Hermann Strings Quartet led by Bernhard Hermann but also served as a professor at the Cologne University of Music and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, as well as a lecturer at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music. This is a reissue from the prestigious German label Wergo, likely from the 1980s. It features compositions written for violin cello and cello by György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, Anton Webern, Paul Hindemith, and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Of particular note is György Ligeti’s Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester, composed in 1966. The piece begins with a cosmic drone performed by the violoncello and gradually expands into a full orchestral development—an absolutely thrilling experience.
