A 1977 album by Pat Metheny, released after he left the Gary Burton Group and marking his second recording for ECM. Alongside keyboardist Lyle Mays and drummer Dan Gottlieb, both of whom would later join the Pat Metheny Group, the album also features the extraordinary German bassist Eberhard Weber. Metheny’s softly played, lustrous 15-string harp guitar, Mays’ flowing piano, and Weber’s buoyant, highly melodic bass lines blend together with breathtaking beauty. The overflowing, radiant sound of B4 in particular suggests a spiritual affinity with Egberto Gismonti and could almost be described as ambient jazz ahead of its time. At the same time, the album clearly foreshadows the distinctive sound that would soon fully blossom with the Pat Metheny Group.
