Released on ECM in 1974, this was the second solo album by Ralph Towner, the lyrical guitarist and multi-instrumentalist best known as a core member of the ethnic-jazz group Oregon. In addition to his many excellent solo recordings, Towner has collaborated with numerous ECM artists including Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Egberto Gismonti, and Keith Jarrett. The entire album was created through multitracking by Towner himself on twelve-string guitar, classical guitar, piano, and gong. From its serene atmosphere, evoking a silent seascape much like the cover artwork, to its deeply emotional and stirring developments, Towner’s distinctive style was already fully formed at this early stage of his career. An album equally rewarding for deep listening indoors or for experiencing out in nature. Japanese pressing released by Trio Records in 1980 as part of the ECM 10th Anniversary Collections series.
