This album is the seventh installment in the Musiques de l’Asie Traditionnelle series, released by Playa Sound, a French label specializing in ethnomusicology, founded in 1974. It features gamelan music from the Indonesian island of Java, performed by the gamelan group Kyahi Sadat Pengasih Kuntul Wirantem. Side A contains a piece called "Gending Babad", which begins with an introduction followed by the melung section, the first part of the main development. In this section, three types of metallophones perform improvised melodies, gradually increasing in tempo. Side B features a piece titled "Gending Tejanata", originally composed at the end of the last century as accompaniment for a royal court dance in the Surakarta palace. The track includes vocals by Niken Larasati, considered the finest singer in Yogyakarta.
