Released by Lyrichord, an American label specializing in ethnic music and locally recorded works, this 2 x LP box set features Buddhist music: side A is a shomyo (Buddhist statement) performed by monks from Myoshinji Temple, the head temple of the Myoshinji sect of the Rinzai Sect in Kyoto; side B2 is a shomyo (Buddhist statement) performed by monks from Enryakuji Temple on Mt. C1 is a nembutsu (Buddhist prayer) performed by priests of Konkai Komyoji Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the Jodo sect of Zen Buddhism and known as a nembutsu dojo; C2 is a Zen chanting performed by priests of Myoshinji Temple; and D-side is a morning chanting performed by priests of Shogoin Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the head temple of the Shugen sect of Zen Buddhism. The works are interesting in that they cover sutra readings from Zen, Nembutsu (Buddhist prayer), and Yamabushi prayer, all of which have been handed down in various sects. In particular, the chorus of waka poems by 20 women from Ishikawa Prefecture in B1 sounds like nothing you have ever heard before. Inside the box and in the booklet are detailed explanations of the Dharma instruments used in Buddhist music. Recommended as an avant-piece.
