This album contains the ceremonial music of the Bariba and Somba tribes that inhabited the northern part of the Benin Kingdom, which existed in the coastal region of West Africa and was destroyed in 1897 after the British invasion. From the UNESCO Collection "Music of the World" series, recorded in the field in 1973, side A contains over 19 minutes of Bariba royal ceremonial music. Side B contains the funeral rites music of the Somba tribe. It begins with a song of mourning, followed by a funeral procession with a wooden flute playing strange sounds to the beat of a one-sided drum, and when they arrive at the cemetery and the music stops, the women dance and clap their hands to the beat. We can see that this music has a very primitive yet orderly structure. Very interesting.
