Released in 1977 from the Nonesuch Explorer Series, which has released numerous ethnic music field recordings, this album features music from the mountainous regions of Western Tibet. The album features a minimalist beat from a drum called damang, which is somewhat similar to a Japanese drum, and a tabla-like drum called danjang, as well as chromatic melodies from a guitar-like stringed instrument called piwan and a wind instrument called surna, which sounds like a chalmera. The music has many similarities with folk music from Persia, China, and Southeast Asia, but it also has its own unique, indigenous flavor. The rhythm and familiar melodies of the songs are also very pleasant. It reminds us of the musical culture brought by the Silk Road.
