This album was released in 1956 on COOK, a label founded by American audio engineer Emory Cook, who used his own recording and editing techniques to produce a wide variety of sound sources. It features field recordings made in the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad. The album captures a range of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and forms, including the groove-laden A1 track, which combines primitive percussion beats with chants, as well as ensembles featuring bamboo tamboo—percussion instruments originating in Trinidad—and bongos played by Charles The Bongo King and residents of the northwestern town of Carenage. This is a valuable document showcasing traditional percussive music from the region.
