A very intriguing record has just arrived. This album, released in 1966, features ancient Swedish pastoral music with lure songs, horns, and pipes. It showcases one of Sweden’s oldest folk music traditions, including performances on the pastoral flute called Sheperd’s pipe and Goat horn—a small type of bagpipe made from animal horns—used by shepherds to call their livestock. The album presents vocal herding calls from the regions of Dalarna and Härjedalen. The high-pitched falsetto voice is produced in an instrumental manner, and under favorable conditions, these calls can carry as far as 5 kilometers. While these herding calls follow traditional patterns, they also contain a significant degree of improvisation, making them fascinatingly avant-garde to modern ears despite their traditional roots. In this sense, they can also be interpreted as a form of "frontier music." This is a truly unique listening experience—be sure to check it out.
