Very obscure stuff just arrived. A double album produced to commemorate the return of Okinawa's administrative rights from the United States to Japan in 1972. Supervised by Japanese folklorist and performing arts researcher Haruo Misumi, this remarkable collection features 27 Okinawan folk songs, including "Asadoya Yunta," "Shirahama Bushi," "Nakazato Bushi," and "Kohama Bushi." The album also offers a rare opportunity to hear Ryukyuan classical music, such as "Kagiyate Fu," which is traditionally performed at celebratory banquets, and "Nakafuu," a type of Ryuka poetry composed of 30 syllables in an 8-8-8-6 pattern influenced by classical Japanese waka poetry. The recording quality is outstanding, and the gatefold includes commentary from five contributors, including linguist Haruhiko Kindaichi.
