Ensemble Nipponia was formed in 1964, the group includes Katsuya Yokoyama (shakuhachi), Keiko Nosaka (koto), Narutoshi Tosha (percussion), Minoru Miki (composition), and other Japanese instrumentalists and contemporary musicians who have expanded beyond the framework of pure Japanese music. This album was released in 1971. The music is arranged by Kanko Ogawa and Shoji Wakamatsu from folk songs from various regions of Japan, such as "Komoro Ma Kouta" from Nagano, "Soranbushi" from Hokkaido, "Otemoyan" from Kumamoto, and "Gujo Bushi" from Gifu, and is performed with classical Japanese instruments such as Shinobue, Nohkan, Shakuhachi, Biwa, Koto, and Taiko, and modern instruments such as 20 and 17 string instruments. The performance is a wonderful example of how the emotions of the original piece can be brought to life and sublimated into a new depiction of a scene.
