Japanese singer Hiromi Ohta, who shot to stardom on the back of the massive 1975 hit “Momen no Handkerchief,” and later moved into new wave and contemporary music territory in the 1980s, released this striking 1984 album. Direction was handled by producer Tomohiko Fukuoka, who would later become her husband, while the arrangers include some of the sharpest names of the day: Masaro Omura, Ayao Itakura, Banana, and Yasuo Sugibayashi of Kujira. The backing lineup is equally impressive, featuring Omura, Itakura, and members of Banana alongside Hideki Matsutake, Kenji Takamizu, Masaki Matsubara, Hoppy Kamiyama, and Kiyohiko Senba. The result is a fascinating oddity that sees Ohta diving into new wave and techno-kayo sounds with remarkable flair. Above all, the arranging sense of the three key players is simply outstanding.
