This is a 4 x LP box set released in 1983, featuring commissioned works for the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, an orchestra founded in 1956 that continues to thrive. The recordings were conducted by Akio Watanabe and captured during a performance at the Tokyo Welfare Pension Hall in 1981. The set includes a comprehensive selection of nine contemporary compositions, including Toru Takemitsu's "Music for Tree" (1961), Taminoro Maedo's "Essay" (1963), Maki Ishii's "So-Gu II" (1971), Ryohei Hirose's "Klima for Orchestra" (1976), and others. The recordings and cutting are outstanding, showcasing a delicate yet powerful production. The set provides a compelling listening experience, covering a range of contemporary musical styles.
