This is the 1975 leader album by the American multi-instrumentalist Ken McIntyre, who has been active since the early 1960s, starting with groups such as The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Bill Dixon 7-Tette, and the 360 Degree Music Experience with Beaver Harris. In this album, McIntyre, known for his masterful compositions, collaborates with virtuosos like Jaki Byard (piano, electric piano) and Reggie Workman (bass), along with Andrei Strobert (drums), who also participated in The Har-You Percussion Group. The quartet delivers a blend of contemporary and post-bop styles, showcasing tracks like the title piece "B1," featuring a shaded flute melody matched with a waltz beat, the delightful Latin/Caribbean arrangements of "B3/B5," and the groovy bluesy feel of "B4." This album encapsulates the distinctive contemporary essence of its time, earning high recommendation.
