An album documenting a live performance held at Tokyo’s Yūbin Chokin Kaikan in 1986 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Japanese drummer/percussionist Masahiko Togashi’s debut. The lineup is truly exceptional, featuring Steve Lacy on soprano saxophone, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano and vocals, and Dave Holland on bass.
Highlights include A1, a newly written Togashi composition prepared especially for this concert, with fascinating Oriental-tinged phrasing from Lacy and Cherry; A2, a classic Steve Lacy original driven by bold, dynamic solos from each musician; and B1, a Togashi original recorded here for the first time, marked by its gentle waltz feel and minimal, quietly hypnotic phrasing. A superb live performance throughout, with these master musicians communicating in perfect intuitive interplay — a lesser-known masterpiece.
