A superb 1986 album by koto player Nanae Yoshimura, who also appears on the outstanding contemporary Japanese instrumental work Individuality of Four Musicians, featured in a column in OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. In addition to solo koto pieces by Yoshimura herself, the album also includes duo performances with shakuhachi master Takafu Mitsuhashi and cellist Hakuro Mohri, both of whom also took part in the above-mentioned work. The composers featured here are Akira Nishimura, Takashi Yoshimatsu, Minoru Miki, and Toshiya Sukegawa. An exceptionally refined program that brings the strengths of traditional Japanese music into a distinctly modern setting. The recording is absolutely beautiful as well, with finely detailed sound particles scattering vividly across the entire acoustic space. Highly recommended.
