This is a 1981 album by Naomi Chiaki, one of Japan’s most iconic female singers, who took the music scene by storm in the early 1970s with Dramatic Kayō hits like "Kassai", "Gekijō", and "Yakan Hikō", before going on hiatus in 1992. Following her first two albums under the Invitation label, where she ventured into new genres such as chanson and American standards, this work boldly arranges fado, the traditional music of Portugal. While fado shares similarities with Japanese folk songs, enka, and kayōkyoku, Naomi Chiaki’s unparalleled expressiveness and lyrical storytelling give it a distinctive character. The album also highlights the exceptional arranging skills of Nobuo Kurata, who would go on to arrange Minato ga Mieru Oka the following year. Notably, Track B5, composed solely of percussion and strings, stands out as one of the most unique pieces in her entire discography. This album is a truly remarkable work that beautifully showcases Chiaki’s profound musical artistry.
