This 4-LP box set, released in 1966, is a collection of music composed in the 1950s and 1960s by Toru Takemitsu, a great Japanese composer who transcended the boundaries of contemporary music and challenged composers with a variety of experimental orientations. The set contains 14 pieces, ranging from his earliest piano piece "Uninterrupted Rest" composed in 1952 to tape music "Vocalism A.I." composed in 1956, orchestral piece "Requiem for Strings" composed in 1957, film music "Kwaidan" composed in 1965, Japanese music "Eclipse" composed in 1966, and other major works in total. The artwork is by Shuzo Takiguchi, a poet and leader of the "Jikken Kobo". The accompanying large booklet includes comments by John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, and others, liner notes by Kenzaburo Oe and Hidekazu Yoshida, and music commentary by Kuniharu Akiyama.
