American singer Abbey Lincoln, who had been active at the forefront since the 1950s and collaborated with numerous top-tier musicians including her former husband Max Roach, Cedar Walton, and Buddy Collette, released this album on Riverside in 1959. The lineup features Kenny Dorham (trumpet), Wynton Kelly (piano), Les Spann (guitar), Sam Jones (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Beginning with track A1—a well-known classic also performed by the likes of Mongo Santamaria and John Coltrane—this outstanding album showcases Lincoln’s husky, ethereal vocals that deeply resonate with the listener. The bluesy slow numbers are especially superb. This is the 1983 U.S. reissue released by Original Jazz Classics.
