German jazz pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, who began performing with Manfred Schoof while studying at the Cologne University of Music, went on to form the Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966 and later founded the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra in 1988, featuring musicians such as Willem Breuker and Kenny Wheeler. This album, released on Enja in 1972, captures him in a solo piano setting. With an exceptionally clear touch and an imaginative melodic sense, Schlippenbach delivers a stunning performance that pays homage to the roots of jazz while transcending its boundaries and venturing into the realm of contemporary music. Far removed from the fierce free jazz intensity of Globe Unity, this recording reveals a more introspective, personal side of his artistry — a truly remarkable work. Highly recommended. This particular copy appears to be an early stock pressing from 1972, later issued with a reprinted outer sleeve circa 1974.
